Are there other attributes, besides defense and Phy Str/ HP, which will help a tank to survive?
There are. Avoidance will help to get hit less often. But at the moment you don’t benefit much from raising quickness.
Resistances will help to reduce magic damage. I recommend getting two gears, one with a ton of defense and avoidance and another with a lot of residences against magic. Both with as much phy str as possible.

Note: At the moment the description of skills is highly inaccurate, in terms of bonus damage and so on. The required level and maximum level of skills may change. Moreover the MP costs will increase with each point you spent.
